Virtual Workshop: Query Plan Caching and Recompiling
Date: Friday, August 27, 2010 at 9:00a Pacific
In this in-depth workshop, you’ll learn about basic management of the plan cache, tools for exploring the plans in cache and detecting when they are reused, query design considerations to provide the optimal caching behavior and best practice guidelines. Taught by Microsoft SQL Server MVP Kalen Delaney, the workshop will explore what you need to know about plan caching, tools you can use when working with plan cache, best practices and much more. This workshop is an in-depth look at how and when SQL Server caches your query plans and how the choice between plan reuse and plan recompilation can significantly impact the performance of your queries and your systems overall.
You’ll learn about three different types of compiled plans that can be cached and reused. You’ll learn about the options for controlling what plans get cached, as well as if and when reuse of the plans can occur and when that is beneficial. You’ll discover the negative impact of parameter sniffing and discover how it can be prevented. Last but not least, we’ll look at the metadata for exploring the plan cache contents to determine exactly what plans are cached, how often they’re being reused, and what the resource cost is of your cached plans .
This is your chance to get extensive learning about how query plan caching and recompiling can help in your own applications. Ask questions, get answers, see examples and more.
