Denny Cherry is Back – Storage and Virtualization Online Course
Denny explains why storage can be one of the largest bottlenecks when it comes to database performance. It’s also one of the hardest to troubleshoot because storage engineers and database administrators often do not get along. He’ll dig into LUNs, HBAs, the fabric, as well as the storage itself. In the second half, he’ll review the pros and cons of moving SQL Servers into a virtual environment. He will also explain how to tie virtual platforms to the storage array, so that DBAs can maximize the storage performance for their SQL Servers and the virtual environment.

Creating a No-Excuse Zone – Part 1
Over the recent weeks, I have met with several clients that got trapped in the "blame game." Oh, I’m not saying they were intentionally blaming other people or external circumstances for their current situation, but they were relinquishing responsibility and ownership to feel better about their current lack of progress. Therefore, today I am introducing the idea of creating "No Excuse Zones"? in your home, work and life.
The Promise of Big Data
Of course the topic of the day is Big Data. If you were asked whether you needed to be working with Big Data in your organization, because it pays off so well in information intelligence, would you know where to begin? It’s all the rage but perhaps one of the most telling things I’ve heard recently was this:
"You keep poking at it, hoping you find something interesting…"
That’s a tough stance to take on something where you have to define the questions, often based on very unknown data, at least when it comes to data relationships. For me anyway, it’s easier to say "I have this sales data, I need to figure out how to report on, trend with, present the information so we can make forecasts." It’s a lot harder to say "we’ve stored all this ancillary data for years, there MUST be something of use there… FIND IT!"
Perhaps it’s just a short-coming of mine. 🙂
There is goodness to be learned, no doubt. I’ve seen some incredible relationships discovered that really do shine lights on important concepts, important trends and things that we simply couldn’t see pulling that sales report. Make no mistake about it though, discovering that relationship is a tough process and sometimes may involve some luck.
Do you think it’s possible (probable?) that we’ll build out data discovery, quirky-relationship-discovery, software? Have you worked with "big data" and found the gems? If so, how did you go about it? The information I’ve seen come out of these is distilled from what I’d call "standard" questions by and large so far. We have to get those done, sure. But I think the real value, the incredible payoffs, will come when we can find information before we know what questions to ask.
But how?
