Building .NET Applications?
Building applications with the right tools can be a huge boon to the success of your application development work. This is where Telerik OpenAccess comes in. Telerik OpenAccess is an Enterprise-grade .Net ORM that does the data access plumbing in desktop and web applications. Supporting both forward (model-first) and reverse (schema-first) mapping, the tool offers transparent persistence for your DAL and business objects. OpenAccess ORM provides tight Visual Studio integration and allows you to seamlessly create database independent code. You can even get a free trial and see how it works in your own environment. Check it out here.

Have You Reviewed Your Audit Requirements?
We received a HIPPAA notice today from our health insurance broker. New regulations are on the very near horizon that dictate how they lock down information in their systems. They also have to have well-defined responses to a data breach – responses that indicate what information is available to those impacted by the breach. They also have to do the whole notification thing to their clients simply outlining the fact that they have these processes in place. Great fun.

It had me thinking about how these requirements impact our database systems and how we stay in the proverbial loop for requirements. I have talked with DBAs in the past that are pretty much innocent bystanders and simply have things edicted upon them (is that a phrase??) for what must be done to respond to compliance and audit situations.

I strongly suggest you get involved. Talk with those that are working through your best practices and compliance issues and make sure you’re in on the process that defines what you’ll be doing. Don’t be reactionary, instead be proactive and involved. By getting into the mix a bit more early-on, you won’t be able to change the requirement of course, but you may be able to change how things are implemented and that leads to how your systems are impacted. Help people understand native tools, what’s straightforward, what’s not, etc.

You can save yourself immense amounts of time in implementing the operations to address compliance. While you’re out there getting involved, look through both native SQL Server tools and third-party tools. Arm yourself with options and you’ll not be facing having to generate all new approaches – you’ll know what’s possible, you’ll know the first steps to making the build or buy decision, etc.
