Looking to Become a DBA?
For years the most common question I was asked when it came to my profession was how would someone get started being a DBA. I don’t know anyone who has been a database administrator over 10 years that started their career wanting to be a DBA. It feels like the DBA’s with over 10 years’ experience became DBA’s out of necessity from another technical field. Maybe it’s just me.

Today some schools have a database program, but what about new people coming into the field? What do you tell people who desire to work with databases but they are not sure where to start?

I have considered recommending a book or two, but is the technology something you can learn if you are not currently practicing it?

There may be a core base of information they you can learn from a book, but short of getting your hands dirty, where can you really learn database technology? Beyond just working with it, isn’t discussion or sharing what you are doing with SQL Server with others just as important?

Let me know what you think. Chris@SSWUG.org

A quick way to move a database from one server to another server is using attach and detach commands that come with SQL Server? If you use the Alter Database command you can even rebuild the log if need be. This can be a quick way to get a development or a testing server ready quickly.
