Database Growth Feedback from Readers
Send in your thoughts here.
From Richard: "Interesting question regarding storage trends. When I was at the DBA class last September I mentioned to you that we had a database that had grown from 48 GB to just over 300 GB in five years.
That database is now sitting at 435 GB and currently growing about 700 MB/day. Throw in a test copy of that database and a log-shipped DR copy and an operational data store used to state ETL and reporting needs, and the storage demands start ballooning rather quickly.
But whether it’s this database in particular (for our medical records) or other databases, the single greatest impact from a storage standpoint for us is auditing. I’d say half the storage in our two largest databases is related to auditing.
(As for Sharepoint – we’re not there yet, though it’s being given some consideration. I’m not exactly waiting for it with eager anticipation)…"
and Jake writes: "We’ve seen a variable rate of growth.
At our peak times, we have seen double and even tripling of data storage space needed. At lesser times, it’s more like 50% or 75% growth. Still, it’s a big change in requirements and we’re struggling (especially because of the variable growth) to project our needs in the near future.
We’re hoping that if we look further back and add more data points to our projections we can see some trends that will help us project out more and do some disk space needs planning. "
