Business Intelligence – Packaged, Exploration?
I’ve been having some very interesting discussions with presenters about BI and how things are evolving in this field. I think it’s really intriguing to see that pre-packaged things are coming out labeled as BI – things that have pre-built reporting, pre-built queries and dashboards.
I have to wonder though….
Are we missing some of the cool points of BI? For me, a good deal of BI is about discovery of things you didn’t expect. Things you didn’t know to even ask about are a huge part of the payoff of BI. When things come pre-built, you run the risk of using the solutions presented… only. One of the really killer things about PowerPivot is that you’re able to play with information and find new combinations, classifications and uses for the raw data you have.
What do you think? Does having a pre-built set of dashboards, reports and the like HELP or hurt your BI solutions? Do you gain more by having some guidance in your BI stuff, or do you gain more by discovering that surprising bit of information?
Drop me a note, let me know – how do you approach it?
