Windows Power Management Configuration

Windows Power Management Configuration
Windows power optimization features can save you a lot of money.; it can also cause you a lot of grief. Here’s an example.

A while back a colleague of mine was having difficulty with a Windows 2012 server installation that would work fine for days. Then, for no apparent reason, connection to the machine could no longer be made. With a little digging my colleague deciphered what was happening.

It turns out that the network card was designed with power saving features allowing the card to be disabled if inactive for a long enough period of time. Since it was inactive, the machine no longer responded to external requests, and could not be enabled again without physically restarting the server.

The solution was simple, configure the Windows operating system installed on the machine for high performance. It was a server class machine being used as a server not really needing power saving for the network cards. This simple fix changed the server from unstable to a rock solid performing machine.

While you’re looking at your servers, why not find other things you can turn off or disable that are not essential to the purpose of the server. I suppose that could be considered another kind of cruft we can get into.

Cheers,
