What is the best configuration for Source Control and Build Management?
Today I’m posting a response from Sunny about automated build management and source control. He is writing in response to the topic we considered regarding the software skill of Release Management, and things that go into it.

Sunny describes the problem clearly in tool selection, methodology, and practices, asking for advice on all. If we really do this right, it could take a couple weeks and result in many contributions. There are a number of ways to configure things, and many great tools for managing software at different cost points. Few people get to use them all, and I haven’t seen any good articles comparing the capabilities and cost/feature ratio.
Here’s what Sunny says:

I got forwarded some articles that Ben Taylor wrote on releasing software which got me thinking about our current environment’s pain points and how other developers/companies get around some of the issues we are having. We have 8 developers.

Our current set-up:

Visual Studio 2010
Source Gear Vault Source Control
3 Main branches
Development
Test
Production
SQL Server Management Studio for our SQL databases
3 Main databases
Dev
Test
Production
Red Gate SQL Compare
Red Gate SQL Data

There is the question and a configuration? I’m going to hold my thoughts for a while giving you time to share your experience. As always, just drop a note to btaylor@sswug.org.

Cheers,

Ben
