On-Demand Sessions Start on MARCH 1, 2011 and Ends MARCH 31, 2011
Have you taken advantage of any of these on-demand courses taught by Eric Johnson yet. The response has been awesome. You have access to all the course content, in this case 12 sessions for either Replication or 12 sessions for SSIS, for an entire month. Study when you have time, learn at your own pace, and establish an expertise in areas where you have not had enough experience. Register for Replication and/or Register for SSIS in this March series. Registration ends February 28th which is next Monday.

What Do You Look For in a DBA?
Well, I’m back to my lists again. I had a number of additions to yesterdays list of valuable characteristics for a DBA of any role.
Kay: Bald is good because it means the person has torn all their hair out trying to make things perfect…….
Diana: I think you should add “creative”. Sometimes the final destination is achieved by creative use of the tools at hand.
Vanesa: Someone who is more than just a GUI. Do you know the sp’s? Can you troubleshoot with just SQL?
Today I want to share another list more specific to the role of an Operational DBA. This individual is a person responsible to keep the lights on. These characteristics are in addition to the general ones shared yesterday.
Hates Change in a Good Way – Wants a baseline picture of performance and hates it when things get out of kilter
Hates Disruption – Builds automation around mundane monitoring tasks and enforcement of policy so energy is spent on higher priorities
Thirsts for Technology – Craves a thorough understanding of hardware and software in order to get the best performance for the Budget available
Security Guru – Knows how to share minimum security credentials to users and services reducing risk. Keeps current understanding of Hacking techniques.
Detailed – Loves work plan and task lists
Risk Averse – Assures Disaster Recovery Plans really work. Locks down un-needed services, ports, etc. Maintains current virus control. Assures firewall configurations are appropriate.
Loves Standards – Has default configurations for everything, yet willing to flex for systems requiring variation from standard.
Documents Configurations and Processes – Has appropriate documentation so others know or can figure out what is going on
Next time I’ll be doing a list on the Database Architect DBA role. Have any other items you want to add for any of these lists…drop me a note at btaylor@sswug.org.
Cheers,
Ben
