Understanding the SDLC Phases of a Software Project [Part I]
Software Development follows various structured models and methodologies similar to any other engineering discipline. Each of these models provides its own set of methodologies to design and develop a software application. The choice of any such models entirely depends on the nature of the software project in hand and the best suited model that can provide better and faster results. This is a series of articles that would discuss the various SDLC phases and takes its readers away from these standard defined models and discusses the key phases of generic software development life cycle (SDLC) that are commonly practiced by the software firms across the globe.

Another Change to the Database?? How is it different?

Keeping up with database changes, schema updates, schema versions and even just the most basic of operations to synchronize schemas between servers is a pain. Anyone that’s deployed a database, only to find out later that a "few" of the table updates didn’t make it in the migration knows the pain of having to recoup those changes, re-apply them, make arrangements for data updates and so much more. You need dbMaestro – it’ll keep track of changes, help you version your database schemas, help you move and migrate databases and much more. Check it out – it might be just what you need.

Unlocking SQL Server Infrastructure Consolidation
Consolidating SQL Server database servers represents an efficient path to infrastructure optimization, with significant benefits to IT. With the right approach, a consolidated framework cures low server utilization, assures availability and dramatically lowers the time and costs spent managing SQL Server environments. Join this webcast, presented by HP PolyServe Database Utility for SQL Server, and learn how a utility approach can enable you to: – Reduce by half the number of servers needed for SQL Server – Decrease storage requirements and software images for comprehensive cost reduction – Provide robust failover and DR services for every server, easily and cost effectively – Reduce the time required to manage servers, storage and O/S patches by as much as 75% – React to capacity changes in 30 seconds for real-time scalability Presented by HP PolyServe (www.polyserve.com)

SQL Server Optimization and Data Protection with Intelligent ISCSI SANs
More and more companies are deploying storage area networks or SANs as storage needs continue to proliferate. SANs deliver many unique capabilities that improve data protection, storage performance and scaling, and reduction in storage management time. Intelligent iSCSI SANs offer an affordable, enterprise-class choice in SAN technologies. We will review best practices in deploying SQL Server in an intelligent iSCSI SAN, and the resulting dramatic improvements in deploying, optimizing, backing up, and recovering SQL. Question from a Reader
Norm wrote in with an issue he’s having getting a report to format correctly – I thought I’d pass it along and see if you knew of an option or solution. I’ll publish back the solution(s) here if anyone has some ideas.

"I was recently roped into being the Treasurer for the local Recreational Football league. They have a roster created in a MS Word document that they have had to fill out by hand. I had turned their registration database and most of the reports into a website using SQL2005 and SSRS. Here’s the rub, In the MS Word document, there are slots for 15 players on a page that has their names, DOB. etc. So I created a SSRS report with a table. If there are only 12 players on a team then the 12 print with the borders around them (like an excel table with gridlines), how do I get the remaining 3 lines to print blank (with the borders/gridlines) to print, to make the 15 so I can mimic the manual form."

Ideas? Drop me a note, let me know.
