Wacha Gonna Do When They Come For You?
I just got the the song stuck in my head and had to find a place to use it as a headline for our newsletter. When we do software nobody comes for us…we hope…well, maybe.

How about those software police? How are you going to keep your company from getting fined? Did you keep track of the software you have installed? Are your licenses up to date? Are you responsible to assure licensing for all of your applications?

How about management? Have they ever come for you? I remember one company that had a CheckPoint firewall running nicely. For Years. The IT Director received great praise for keeping IT Costs down…that is, until the machine the firewall ran on died after running for 12 years. He didn’t have a plan. He didn’t even have a spare disk (the part that died). And when the entire company was brought to it’s knees until a replacement could be puchased and installed, we all suffered (about 2 days).

So, are you keeping management aware of the costs for running software/hardware that is becoming obsolete. If you do, you have less chance of being the goat when things go bad. Let them take the risk.

I have others. I’ll drop them in for future thoughts. In the mean time, send me your thoughts about the things that keep you awake at night. Those things that, if they break, you’ll have them coming for you. I’m at btaylor@sswug.org.

Cheers,
Ben
