Does the XML Ruling Against Microsoft Have Impact on SQL Server?
It’s not clear whether that’s the case. Whether "custom XML" is something that is simply stored by SQL Server or is processed by SQL Server, I have to wonder if support for it will extend to SQL Server and be impacted by the recent ruling. I think probably that the case is that SQL Server is just storing information, not necessarily processing it, but I have seen a few people talking about how this could impact other products outside of simply Word. Here’s more information about the XML issue Microsoft is facing. I’m betting it’s not going to impact SQL Server, but we’ll have to see how both the ruling and the appeals process are handled.

SQL Server 2008 R2
I had a great call, demonstration and discussion with Microsoft going over key features, updates and upgrades on the new SQL Server 2008 release (R2). I have to say that it’s really quite impressive what they’re doing for standardizing server farm management and application of policies to your servers. I suppose this is the feature area that I first latch onto because it seems like something that can have a huge impact on the typical SQL Server installation. It’s challenging to standardize and keep track of settings and options on multiple servers with today’s native tools. You can do it, sure. But application and monitoring of policies can be a drag.

With the new release, you’ll be able to check for policy compliance, then drill down into a problem area to see what’s up. You can do this for groups of servers and you can apply policies and controls across those groupings. You can also declare exceptions to your policies (perhaps allocating more disk space or adjusting threshholds, for example) and see trending information about your systems. Pretty slick.

The preview information is out – and you can get a lot more information on the R2 site, here. We’ll be working with it here, as well and will surely keep you posted on these and other new abilities.
