Tools for SQL Server Backup Heroes
Recent trends in the database industry have lead to a number of challenges for managing SQL Server. Most databases grow in size over time. Regulatory requirements mandate maintaining certain amounts of data online. Users also want to see more of their data. And the number of users for database applications grows over time as users discover where relevant data is located. To address these challenges, DBAs and other IT professionals must look to new technology to continue to perform their jobs effectively and in the same amount of time. In this session, we’ll explore the challenges of increased storage and consolidation, log shipping, clustering and other solutions to help the true heroes of SQL Server meet the test.

About the "Things Overheard"…
Daniel wrote in with some feedback on my conversations that I’ve overheard a couple of times lately (wrote about these yesterday):

" I totally agree with your findings. This is not new though. This happens in IT support groups internal to an organization. This happens in developments groups for custom or off the shelf software products.

In my opinion this is fertile ground for the Web 2.0 technologies that sprout up around these products. Sites that allow you the customer to work around the stonewalling of these (in my opinion unscrupulous) practitioners of the trade. Vendors that understand this behavior leverage these practices to further gain market share and expertise with out ever having to pay a dollar for the smarts. One example of this is VMWare (of which we are a satisfied customer) and their user communities.

This also leads to the development of assistive tools that can be used to reverse engineer database structures to allow you to maintain/leverage off the shelf and custom applications to gain technical advantage over someone who relies on only the vendor provided support.

I personally have made a career of strengthening the position of my user base and this general practice has always served me well. It creates a resource for me of people who know what I know about these systems and mor importantly also know what I DON’T about them. What would Microsoft be without user community resources that they have."
