Key Management Information Bits
From time to time the topic has come up about whether you should stand out as a DBA, or should be the strong, silent type. I think it’s pretty clear that being proactive and making the boss look good leads to a strong employment position. I wanted to see, though, how you go about this? I’ve gathered up several different items that I suggest presenting to management to help them know what they need to know and plan going forward. I thought I would share a few of them here, then see what other items you’ve found helpful to share.

1. Your disaster recovery plan – help them have the confidence that the work you do is about recovery and keeping systems online.

2. Proactive planning for disk space growth and management of your physical server resources – disk, CPU, RAM, etc. When will you need more – as far out in advance as possible. The more warning and planning time you can give for expenditures, the better.

3. Stats on utilization – users, applications, databases. This helps show the volume of applications and systems you’re managing.

4. Volumes of information – this is your shock and awe item. Make sure they understand the importance and volume of information you’re helping them manage. Be sure they understand the quanities, so they can relay these to the next in line boss – "I didn’t realize that we were storing more than 10M customer records! My team rocks!"

What else do you provide regular updates about for your boss?

Drop me a note, let me know.
