SQL Server DBAs Visionary?

What is "Vision" And Do You, As A DBA, Participate?
Last week I posted a request for questions to be included in our survey of database professionals. One of the question suggestions I received (Thanks Jeremy!) was about vision. Specifically, do you participate in the "vision" type meetings when it comes to working with your databases? Do you help define directions, how things will work, things to consider and plan for going forward, etc.

The second part of the question was great though – and food for thought. What exactly is "Vision" anyway? Many will define it differently and that was the point. What does "Vision" mean to you? What would you say the question is about – and, do you consider yourself participating in vision-type conversations and planning?

For me, this is less a question of "does a DBA do this" and more a question of personality and what you like to do professionally. I know many people that really like the vision-oriented stuff, and many others that despise it and want to focus on the operational aspects of business, rather than the "plotting and scheming" that is more forward-looking.

So, my question(s):

– How do you define "vision" in terms of IT and your position, and
– Do you participate in these types of meetings for your IT work
