Working with Idera, SQL Sentry and Others?
We need your feedback! We’re working with VendorRate to produce community-oriented and provided ratings of vendors we all rely on. This is your chance to provide your quick feedback on the vendors you use in your own company, while at the same time seeing ratings and feedback from others. It’s a great way to get a solid understanding of those vendors you may be working with or considering working with. It’s a snap, it only takes a second, and you can get more information here (and possibly even win a Dell laptop).

Simple Things to Protect Your SQL Server…
I’ve been hearing more and more from different people we work with that they’re looking for just about every angle to protect their SQL Servers – from the very basic options to the more complex. What types of things are you doing? The short list that we’ve been hearing and talking about with people include:

– logins and passwords – tie your logins and passwords to your Windows logins and passwords and apply policies.
– lock down physical access to your SQL Servers – don’t let them touch it without just cause.
– firewall – get the SQL Server off the ‘net and behind a firewall.
– ports – consider putting SQL Server on a non-standard port – can be an issue with some software, but worth looking into nonetheless.
– audit – look at logins, make sure you know who’s coming into, and who’s TRYING to come into, your server.

What other types of things – both basic and not-so-basic, do you suggest as good starting points?

The FAQ is community-driven and even supports more than one answer for a given question. We’ve found that this lets people indicate what experiences they’ve had, even when they don’t work "like they’re supposed to." Check out the SSWUG FAQ system here.
