Software Licensing – Vs. Software Renting
I wrote yesterday about the software licensing issues we’ve seen a couple of times lately. Specifically, license keys that expire and must be renewed, though it’s not clear this is the case when purchasing the software. I’m not talking about maintenance, updates, upgrades, new versions and the like. I’m talking about installing software and having it stop working a year later.

I’m still investigating to make sure we’re indeed seeing what we think we’re seeing. Several people wrote in asking to know what companies are doing this – as soon as we have "fer shure" information, we’ll share it, I promise. It might be an interesting thing to have a guide to vendor licenses…

In the meantime, several people wrote that they weren’t overly surprised either. That the software is evaluated by one set of staff, requested for purchase by another, approved by yet another and actually acquired by someone else (ala’ purchasing). In the meantime, the concept of reviewing the license agreement has long since gone out the window. I hope this isn’t the case, but I have to say, I had several people bring this up independently without prompting. Yikes.

More to come on this – what are your experiences? Drop me a note and let me know.
