Remote DBA
Chris Shaw send me an Email about some of the benefits of a remote DBA to a business. I thought I would share some of his thoughts here. Some of the reasons you might consider a remote DBA are:
Having a remote DBA take care of the daily operations frees internal staff to work on longer term strategic utilization of database resources.
A remote DBA can act as a backup to full time staff that do not have backup resources on staff
A remote DBA can be used for supplementing expertise not available from current staff or for training purposes
A Remote DBA can be used to validate current procedures and practices.
For a small business, a remote DBA may be used exclusively when there is not enough work to justify a FTE.
A Remote DBA is a great way to help support the Accidental DBA having just inherited the role with little or no training. People such as Michelle Poulet have some great resources in this area.
Using a remote DBA does not mean you have to go offshore; although that certainly is an option in some situations. Most likely a remote DBA is filling those roles where you can’t justify a Full Time Employee, and dare not risk your data assets.
There are a number of ways a remote DBA can be engaged. Some work from a retainer, keeping track of their time, and deduct the hours worked from the retainer. Other companies prefer to have a specific number of hours guaranteed, hiring a remote DBA for N hours per month. Other companies simply pay a flat monthly fee to keep all their database assets working. There are other options as well depending on the needs of the customer, and the availability of remote DBA Staff.
