MySQL Basic SQL Part V – Counting with SQL
Many counting problems I see in answering reporting questions centers around the ability to sum, count, group, and select rows. Most SQL practitioners can count or sum values just fine but when they must answer questions on how the counting or summing relates to other information they don’t quite know where to start. Read on to learn a few counting tricks in MySQL

Had a little newsletter hiccup yesterday – please take a look at the editorial here if you’d like to catch up.

Keep Learning!
I really love talking with speakers – I have learned a lot and wanted to pass along that it’s really important to find people with opposing and different views, ask questions, then listen. I had a number of assumptions and my own opinions about different technologies we cover here and I’ve learned both about more details on these, and about new applications or approaches to the technology. This is *critical* for being an outstanding database professional.

You need to constantly be learning, looking for new ways that other people are applying technology. How do they approach data marts? How do they create their reporting? What types of utilities do they run? Most importantly, WHY?

Ask questions, talk, see what applies to your work, what doesn’t. There will nearly always be at the very least a golden nugget of information and, who knows, perhaps they’ll you’ll have a sudden, deeper, new understanding of something that can save you time, money and/or sanity.

I know this seems a bit like basic advice, but if you’re like me, you get going on the normal stuff of life so quickly, so fast and furious, that you get a bit entrenched in what you do day-in and day-out. Take a few minutes and find someone to have some discussions with and ask questions, ask for opinions. Could be online, could be in-person. Just ask.
