Convergence of Platforms?
Are you seeing a convergence of tools and capabilities for the different database platforms? I suppose there are pretty clear lines between the "raw" products that are SQL Server, Oracle and the like, but if you’re using third-party tools, you’ll quickly see that they’re working very hard to normalize the tools across platforms. This makes your experience with their tools the same, but I wonder too if it takes away from the unique capabilities of the products.

Do you see this happening as you work with tools? Do you feel limited or empowered by cross-platform tools? I ask (and I mentioned it on today’s show too) because I have been seeing a few cases where someone had to drop out of the more general tool and go back to native access and update methods. It had me wondering how often this happens with other shops.

I think too that this convergence may make it harder to select platforms to work with. If they all look the same (without regard to whether they’re the same under the covers), how do you decide which platform to use for a given project?

Things that make ya go hmmm… Would love to hear your thoughts, feedback and experience on this. What do you think?
