Life After Upgrades

PASS 2011 Starts Today
I’m sure many of us would like to be at PASS. For those of us who are not attending, don’t forget that there will be some interesting content available online. Check out www.sqlpass.org/summit for more details.

If you’re attending the summit, don’t forget you have the opportunity to make donations helping the homeless in the Redmond community. You can dropping them off at the SSWUG booth #236 as well as many other locations. For more details see Chris Shaw’s blog at http://chrisshaw.wordpress.com/2011/10/05/sqlgive.

Life After Upgrades

Here is a topic I touched on a little bit last week. After you upgrade software, how does it modify your disaster recovery plan? How does it impact your historical records retention plan?

Some companies keep database backups for a longer periods, sometimes for years. Often this retention is based on external requirements to meet the specifications of SOX, HIPAA, PCI, etc.

Can you afford to maintain redundant hardware for the rare case you may have to restore a database that was used to generate a backup using a previous version of your software, or software purchased from a vendor?

With SQL Server there are some interesting options with third party tools allowing you to review a database from a database backup without actually restoring the database. But there are a lot of other database engines out there. Also, this doesn’t help when you release new versions of your own home grown software. How do you deploy bits that work with a database backup from 6 months or even 18 months past?

Let’s see what you think. I’m sure many of you have had to solve this problem using a number of different techniques. Why not write in and share with our readers your valuable experience. I’m sure we are going to be solving this problem once again real soon. Send your comments to btaylor@sswug.org.

Cheers,

Ben
