Important Information for SQL Server Evaluations
I saw a post on the email discussion lists today that I wanted to be sure to pass along.

The original question was dealing with maintenance plans that had stopped working – the error message was indicating that the evaluation period had expired and, of course, SQL Server wouldn’t run the maintenance jobs. After confirming that this was the case (that it had expired), the original poster went on to talk about the troubles upgrading from and evaluation copy of SQL Server to a fully-licensed copy of SQL Server once the evaluation had expired.

I’ll be the first to tell you – I’ve not been through this – we’ve worked to make sure the evaluation copy is updated prior to expiration. Apparently that’s a good thing, upgrading before it expires.

The prevailing wisdom this poster conveyed was that it was difficult/impossible to upgrade in-place when moving from an expired evaluation. That you’ll need to first uninstall the evaluation copy, then install the licensed version of SQL Server. I’ll do some checking and see if this is the case, but it’s important to keep this in mind if you’re working with evaluation copies – make sure you get that evaluation copy upgraded if you intend to use it – and do so before the eval period expires.
