Impact of Tablets

Today I had the pleasure of flying across the USA with my family. I hadn’t been to an airport for a while so I had a lot of fun watching how different people interacted.

There appears to be a whole new culture in airports where you can see an electric socket with dozens of people surrounding the source, hoping to get an opportunity to plug in their tablet, phone, reader, ipod etc. There is a whole new class of people that are addicted to electricity, and all the rich goodness it brings. There was enough going on there to write a movie about; the quest for electricity.

It seems clear to me that the small platform is going to be a direction we are going to have to go sooner or later. Windows choosing to have a common experience on any size platform may make that a reality in a lot of ways.

What should we do with those applications that don’t lend themselves to a small screen? What new capabilities can we add to our applications as a result of having highly portable mobile devices capable of connecting to our servers?
