How Will Mobile OS Change the Way We Do Business?
Decades ago there was a dream of once again centralizing systems with clients running on hardware not much more intelligent than old Mainframe terminals. IT would have better control of applications because they would be executed from a central location such as Citrix or Unix.

There was the dream of the Win Term which was a windows based GUI terminal with just enough resources to get it booted and enable a remote session on a powerful server.

Today, with Software as a Service as a reality, and the miniaturization of hardware into tiny packages, we are experiencing the potential of those dreams in a tiny form factor.

Software platforms from Apple, Google, and Microsoft fitting on disconnected, or lower band networked machines make new ideas possible for business applications.

With the Google Chrome OS, businesses can extend the reach of their browser based applications. With the Android OS (a Linux variant purchased by Google) even more sophisticated applications are possible. With the Apple OS there are many possibilities as well.

These operating systems are powerful enough to extend them far beyond the smart phone form factor into larger products, blurring the boundary between a phone and a small computer.

This isn’t really news. I’d like to hear from our readers how these possibilities have changed your job, your processes, or even the vision for your company.

Are you moving toward SaaS applications for things such as scheduling work? Do you use your smart phone to manage your remote servers in a crunch? Are you developing software targeted at a thin client? Will the Chrome OS change the way you develop software?

Let’s get a dialog going. Send your feedback to btaylor@sswug.org.

Cheers,

Ben
