How Is Your Hardware?

You’re probably wondering what I’m talking about. I got tired of the loud fan on my desktop computer. So, I went down to a local computer geek store and bought a brand new heat sync and fan with high capacity cooling. I happily opened my case and replaced the old part that came with the computer with my new heat sync. It’s so much quieter now; in fact the fan never comes on.

So, I decided it was time to look at my wife’s computer. The fan on her desktop runs constantly and sounds like a jet airplane. She has an old Gateway with one of the thin cases. I opened it up and found that the heat sync was completely packed with lint. A little love with the air compressor and you can now look through it again.

I simply cleaned the old part on her machine because it wasn’t worth any investment, and it didn’t have any room in the case anyway. The result, her machine runs a lot faster now, and the fan never comes on. Most of us know that a hot CPU will slow down in order to reduce heat. So, even with a fan at full speed, a heat sync that is full of lint will bring your machine to its knees.

Being a database person I started thinking about my servers. This is not really my area of expertise. But I’m sure they need a little love and attention now and then to keep them in top condition. How about some input from our members who handle hardware maintenance tasks. What kinds of maintenance do you do on your database servers? Drop a note to ben@sswug.org so we can share with the rest of our readers.

For those of you who are doing database tuning, there will be a virtual workshop on database indexes presented by Kalen Delaney this Friday, July 23rd. I’d recommend you go see what she will be doing…it’s top notch. Check it out at www.vconferenceonline.com/shows/workshops/indexing.asp. It will be worth your time.

Cheers,

Ben
