Anthony: "My colleague and I have had nothing but issues with Sharepoint and SQL Server – specifically Reporting Services. We literally spent a week trying to get Reporting Services and Sharepoint to cooperate when we finally gave up.

We found it utterly frustrating why MS had to make integration so horribly painful. As soon as we would decipher what one cryptic error message meant, lo and behold, we’d be greeted with another…and another…and another.

I’m sure that Sharepoint and SQL Server – when they play nicely together – can have some benefit. But as of right now, I’d even be happy to just get it configured and running. Quite frankly, I don’t see that happening."

Daniel: "We use SharePoint 2007 in a virtual environment. It was installed there and went production over a year ago. We have not had any significant reduction in performance….

As a matter of fact, our users prefer the performance of the new system as the previous (in physical) did have performance issues.

The big thing with running in a virtual environment is that you have to size the virtual machine appropriatly. We run SQL and SharePoint in vm on 2 separate servers… This keeps the performance and troubleshooting issues pure… SQL for SQL issues… SharePoint server for SharePoint problems…

We also make a practice of keeping the 2 vm’s in the same host environment (and virtual switch) this keeps network traffic between those two boxes all virtual and at bus speed…. something to consider…"
