DB In the Cloud

You don’t have time to put together all the infrastructure for disaster recovery, or the redundancy for al the different kinds of failover that can happen. Or you don’t have the technical resources to keep your database afloat? Did you consider Cloud computing?

There are a lot of vendors getting into this space. Microsoft, Google, Amazon, IBM, Dell, HP, CDW to name just a few. Each of these companies have different versions of the cloud with their own branding and options.

The thing in common is that you outsource your stuff, and they keep the lights on. Does the server room get flooded? With these kinds of services, it could happen and you wouldn’t even know. I’m sure different levels of service will be priced accordingly. But it may be cheaper than doing it yourself. Economy of scale.

So who is doing it? How does your outsourcing work with regulations such as HIPAA, SOX, PCI, SAS70, etc? What levels of service do you find are cost effective? Would you recommend it to other businesses? What are the questions a business should ask when looking into Cloud Services from your perspective and experience?

As always, drop a note to btaylor@sswug.org. I’ll be glad to post your responses.

Cheers,

Ben
