Keeping Up With SQL Server
One of the issues I have with SQL Server, or managing them and the other things you have to do daily anyway, is that keeping on top of errors, logs and such is a LOT of information to keep track of. If you add to that the fact that you want to keep up with other things happening in the industry, you can quickly get lost in the information flow. One of the tools I’ve been using a lot is RSS. (reader.google.com is a great, free reader.) Did you know that you can read your SQL Server job status information, logs and just about any TSQL statement results using RSS? You can. Check this out when you get a minute. Bring all of your information sources together in a single space and you’ll be miles ahead of the information rush. Find out how, here. (It’s free!)
Day 30 as DBA
What would you suggest? I have my list that we’ll be going through in the show, but I wanted to ask too what you would see as happening in the 30 day timeframe, new on the job. Specifically, you might recall that we did the Day 1 as DBA webcast, covering how to get started when you get into a new job or even just assume new responsibilities. We talked about the important stuff – scripting out databases, understanding the structure of your systems, etc. Of course many mentioned too – find out where the bathrooms were and where the coffee is.
So, now that you have a feel for your systems, know the management structure and such, what’s next? What do you recommend people do once they’ve passed the basics of understanding the systems they’re dealing with? Do you go after locking down security? Do you start inserting yourself as much as possible in development cycles? Do you start disaster recovery plans full-out?
Drop me a note – let me know your thoughts, what you suggest.
