Database Appliances
One of the trends from vendors that seems to be growing is the database appliance. Different vendors are providing pre-defined systems individually or with strategic alliances.

Oracle has taken the approach of having a single standard appliance with a common platform, software versions, and even hardware. Their goal with this single configuration is to be able to reduce the number of variables impacting performance or causing issues. The intention is to establish enough commonality so that those using the Oracle systems may benefit from each other’s experience.

Informatica partners with Teradata bringing a powerful solution to large scale database systems.

IBM certainly has their offerings on a number of different platforms, meeting many different storage requirements.

EMC continues to push the envelope with strategic storage using combinations of tape, slow Disk, High Speed Disk, SSD and RAM resulting in the provisioning of data on many different degrees of performance.

Microsoft announced with the release of SQL Server 2008 R2 its entry into the appliance model for parallel data warehousing, with strategic alliances with different hardware vendors.

How do you think this trend will impact our businesses? Will it change the skill set required for Administration or development? Are we going to be able to share lessons learned like in the Oracle vision? Will this become the platform of the private cloud?
