Begin with the End In Mind
Sometimes it takes going "back to basics." I’ve been talking with speakers as they are putting together their sessions for the vConferece – and in particular the Business Intelligence speakers. Interestingly, I keep hearing the same thing when it comes to projects…

My question: "Do you have a common approach to setting up BI applications and successful BI implementations."

Speakers: "Start at the end – what are you trying to accomplish?"

Of course! This is typical of application development too – forget what you may want to provide as far as suggestions for how to get "there" from here – instead, gather information about the specific problem or bit of information that you’re trying to produce as an end-result. It seems so clear, so obvious. It avoids miscommunication and it also lets you determine what the best way is for getting information to solve the problem – you can step back, review the ways you have of accomplishing the goal and so-on.

Sometimes, you just have to step back and figure out the end-point first, then what options you have for attaining it.
