Azure Backups

Azure Backups

Microsoft has developed a number of different technologies taking advantage of the Azure Blob Storage Service. One of the most impressive of these technologies is the Backup Service. Taking advantage of the durability of the Blob Storage Service, Microsoft has built backup and restore capabilities allowing you to backup and restore servers, files and databases. Backups can be compressed and encrypted for performance and security.

There really isn’t anything new about the whole concept. We have been saving data to the cloud for a long time. We have been backing up important data for a long time. We have been encrypting and compressing data for a long time.

What is nice about this new service is the ease of use and simple integration into the Microsoft technologies. The Database Backup tool can interact with a database. Backups for virtual machines or real machines may be restored on other devices.

In short, because it is built by Microsoft to work with their products, it should be easy to use and work seamlessly. Is it something you need? Is it fast enough to work with your data hungry machines? Is it only performant enough to use with Azure hosted systems?
