Webcast: Agile Business Intelligence – Proven Techniques that move BI Development into the Agile World
As more and more organizations embrace agile development methodologies, tools and agile processes are becoming more mainstream and almost transparent to the developer; however, the problem of embracing agile development is still an issue for those working on Business Intelligence projects. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that tools for BI development haven’t quite caught up to the unique problems presented by Business Intelligence development.

This session will discuss Agile techniques as they relate to Business Intelligence Projects, with a particular focus on Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) development. Attendees will learn how to adapt the Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF) for Agile process template for Business Intelligence, and will show how to integrate Visual Studio Team System and Team Foundation Server into your agile BI projects. Attendees will leave this session with a good understanding of how agile can apply to the BI world.

Agile Database Development
I was going to write quite a bit more on Agile Database Development for BI today, and will drop some further content in the editorial for tomorrow. However, I found some interesting stuff written by Michael Baylon in his blog that provides a lot more content than I have time to write in a daily editorial.

One thing that is helpful in BI development is having two teams. Often you are working on reports or data transformation processesrequiring data to first be gathered and placed into staging tables or a data warehouse. With two teams you can stagger the work to be done. First the ETL team can work on gathering and importing data required for consumption. The following period, the second team focuses on reports or transformations of the imported data.

There is no black line on how to break this up…it varies based on the team members and their skills. Because of the dependencies, you can often demonstrate progress to your product owner more readily by breaking things up so that they are seeing something new each iteration, rather than having to wait every other iteration for something visible.

Drop me a note with your comments or experiences .

Cheers,
Ben
