Mini-Survey Early Results
Our mini-survey on upgrade timeframes is interesting, and has some expected, some unexpected results. The expected items are all of the people writing in saying "Upgrade? My software won’t even run on new editions of SQL Server yet! We’re still running 2000…" – I’ve had a number of you writing in saying that (a full 10%). The balance of the timeframes fall into place like this, so far:

Upgrade every…
7% 3-6 Months
16% 6-12 Months
23% 12-18 Months
26% 18-24 Months
10% 2-3 years
19% 3-4 years
16% 4+ years

I’ve rounded the percentages and grouped things as best I could for now – it’ll be interesting to see if the percentages hold. Send in your feedback here – let me know how you approach it. The original question centered around managing updates at the server-level. The clear indicator here, with this group of people anyway, is that the upgrade is largely tied to the upgrade process for SQL Server. Most people wrote in saying they tied hardware and OS upgrades with SQL Server upgrades, doing it largely "all at once."

I’ll publish some of the accompanying comments starting on Monday. Send your feedback here.
