Interesting survey came out about cloud plans – while I’m sure our audience is somewhat biased, I’m curious what others think of the findings. Specifically, in a nutshell, the findings were that Azure is overtaking AWS in terms of environment of choice where there is a preference.
This last bit I thought was intriguing. I haven’t personally been able to make a case for mixed cloud provider environments. This is because there are variable costs that come along for the ride in that type of solution – data costs of simply moving information between the environments, some duplicate licensing potential, etc. It can add up. To-date, it’s added up to “pick one, not both” for a single application environment.
But that’s not really what the report is saying. It’s saying that there is significant overlap in those that they talked to – people on both platforms. I can only surmise that they’re (planning to) cherry pick environmental pieces.
Here’s a link to more information about the report
It’s also showing that the cloud is finally becoming a mainstream choice for environment selection. Before, in studies I’d seen and even in our own surveys from time to time, the cloud was more about niche’ solutions rather than mainstay approaches. This appears to be shifting.
So my questions to you are several if you have a few minutes (feel free to use the discussion tool below this posting):
– Overall, do you apply the same findings to your own plans?
– Do you find yourself gravitating toward Azure and the various pieces and parts of it?
– Where would you say you feel DIFFERENTLY than the findings – either on an overall level, or a specific area?
It’s not about going through it detail (though, feel free of course), but more about whether you feel trends like this are happening with your systems or those that you work with.
To say that things are moving foward, always, is an understatement. But that’s what makes it all so much fun, yes?
