500,000 Database Servers on the ‘Net
Man-O-Man. David Litchfield did some audit work on the ‘net testing to see how many database servers were exposed – living directly on the Internet without protection of a firewall.

500,000. Give or take a few.

Wow. We’ve talked repeatedly on the show and in webcasts, articles and editorials about the fact that your database server really has no business being directly on the Internet. Behind a firewall, cloaked from the world, is the best practice. In fact, it should be the only practice.

So, while I know that now SSWUG readers are part of this group (right?!), make sure you talk with other DBAs and let them know – if they’re part of this number, which included both SQL Server AND Oracle, they need to get with the program.
