A Question on Updates
Josh
asks: "How many people upgrade multiple major pieces of their platform at the same time. For example upgrade both the OS and SQL server. I am referring to major upgrades like the one indicated by Jeremy which sounded like upgrading a 32 bit SQL 2K on Win2k3 to 64 bit Win2k8 on SQL2k8. If people do this how can you determine what is the cause of the issue? I can see this occurring if your upgrading a third party applications server to their approved software levels, but if the servers are hosting custom applications how can you troubleshoot this type of upgrade?"

Feedback on Updates, Frequencies
Carey
writes "You need another category. “Upgrade? The software won’t run on 2005 yet”"

Barry: "We may be an anomaly as we haven’t updated for SQL Server 2000 yet. Once we moved to a new box about 3 years ago we’ve had adequate performance for our needs. It wasn’t until a few months ago that our last OTS application was updated to support SQL Server 2005, so we really didn’t need to move.

Now we’re trying to determine whether to go to 2005 or 2008. Probably the latter if the testing we’re doing works out. Since this will probably require a different box it will be a while before we get there though."

Amy: "It depends primarily on the company.

The last company I was with (last 2 yrs)- they were primarily Sql Server 7 shop – by the time I left 3 months ago, they were at 2005 and few 2000. So, approximately 45 sql server instances there. They were upgrading at least every 3 months – 6 months.

My current company doesn’t upgrade since it’s heavily tied in with SAP – so, pretty much when they want to upgrade SAP (add a patch, whatever), then we add in whatever we need to the Sql Server environment. I have a bunch of 2005 clusters that are just at the 2005 RTM version, and no service packs. So, to answer your survey – next month for sure – and then probably yearly or every 18th months as deemed appropriately."
