Headed to Vacation – What NOT To Do
Last Friday I mentioned that you should plan now for taking time off – getting your systems and processes in place now will give you peace of mind so you can better enjoy your vacation time. I’ve had a few people write in with "I’m going to install new backup software, new monitoring software and new automation so I can take a bit of time off…" type messages.

The one thing I’d suggest is NOT changing the world. That dreaded question when things go wrong – "What Changed?!" – is not one you want to invite just as you’re trying to relax on a day off or two.

While it’s great to get some of these things in-place and going so you can get some things streamlined and automated, now is not the time to be changing how you’re getting things done. Sure, if you want to put in place more monitoring or remote access tools, great. But if you’re looking at changing out scheduling tools or backup tools or … well, things that do the work of running your SQL Server, now is not the time.

If you have projects like that, consider saving them until after your break. The last thing you want to do is introduce new variables to the support mix at a time when you may have fewer resources available to you if things go wrong.
