Best Practices Tools from Microsoft for SQL Server
Microsoft has the Best Practices Analyzer and the Security Analyzer tools – both free, both available to scan and analyze your systems. These are some of my favorite tools only because you can point them at your systems and get a very fast picture of where things stand, what you need to pay attention to, etc.

I’m constantly surprised, though, about how many people don’t know about these. Have you used them? If so, were they helpful to you? I’ve only run across a number of accounts that have used them regularly. Most that I’ve seen will run them intermittently and get information back, but then acting on it always seems to come with the "yes, but…" clarification of why the best practice isn’t in place. I admit that we’ve been guilty of this as well. Security, access controls, disk configurations – the best practices tool in particular will point out exactly that – best practices. What it doesn’t, and can’t, do is to know what your application and user requirements are. Sometimes it’s just not possible, for example, to have Windows-based security for all access.

Have you used these tools? Did you know they existed? What are your experiences with them? What’s your favorite way of taking stock of your systems?

Drop me a note, let me know how you go about this. Email me here and let me know.
