Using System Monitor to tune SQL Server 2005 (Part 1)
Here are some helpful tips to use System Monitor with SQL Server 2005.

SQL Sentry – Huge Announcement
Our friends at SQL Sentry just announced that their performance tools now include Performance Advisor for Analysis Services! This is an amazing tool that you can use to really optimize your Analysis Services performance and have a clear picture of what’s going on. From the SSAS Performance Dashboard to calendar views for events to monitoring and alerts, it’s all covered and monitored for you. Using SSAS? You’ve got to see this and give it a try on your own systems. Get your trial version here and check it out on your SSAS installation.

Every Now and Then You Have to be Reminded of the Basics
So many times we forget the basics. Backup. Restores. Baseline statistics.

So, here’s your reminder. If you’re doing backups, great. They don’t mean anything though unless you can restore. I’ve been reading more and more about people doing funky things with backups. From wholesale copies of the live database (instead of pulling actual backups) to odd combinations of backups, transaction log backups and so-on.

Make sure you KNOW that it’s working. Make sure your approach nets you a RECOVERABLE solution. In other words, test it. Get a system, restore that database, re-attach it, whatever. But make sure your system works like you think it does. Make sure you know the steps to get it back online and going. It’s *the* most important thing you’re responsible for as a DBA. There are a whole lot of people out there that believe that if you cannot restore a system that you’re responsible for, you should be fired on the spot. A bit extreme, but the point is well-taken.

Does your model really work? Does it work exactly like you expect it to? If not, it’s time to change your model, like yesterday.
