Windows 7 and SQL Server (and Windows Server 2008 R2 RC)
There is a new knowledge base article on Microsoft talking about what you need to know when installing SQL Server 2008 on a Windows 7 system – if you’re working with this, be sure to take a look. Here’s the overview:

"This article describes the known issues when you install Microsoft SQL Server on a computer that is running Windows 7 release candidate (RC) or Windows Server 2008 R2 RC.

– For all editions of SQL Server 2008 running on Windows 7 and on Windows Server 2008 R2 RC, you must have at least SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed.
– For all editions of SQL Server 2005 running on Windows 7 and on Windows Server 2008 R2 RC, you must have at least SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (SP3) installed.
"

I don’t typically reference KB articles here, but I’ve had a number of people write in looking for information and things that need to be considered for installations that work with Windows 7. This is especially true with the widely reported news that Windows 7 has gone final and is going to manufacturing shortly.

Mark Your Calendars – DBA School
Chris Shaw and I are going to be doing a classroom-based class – "DBA School" – in September. We’re going to keep the group very small (max 15 ppl) and will be opening registration in the next week or so. We’ve had a lot of people asking for this so we wanted to pull together an amazing class and get real-world information you do that you can apply immediately. We’ll be covering several major areas over 3 days in a hands-on workshop environment:

– Performance management and tuning
– Server management and administration
– Auditing
– SQL Server Security and Threat Management
– Disaster Recovery
… and more.

If you’d like to get on the list for an early announcement about registration opening, and be able to be part of the early input on the planning for the class, please send a note to DBASchool@sswug.org – we’ll get you on the list and you’ll have first dibs on the launch of the class. The class date is currently planned to be the 2nd week of September. We will be strictly limiting class size to 15.

Drop us a note at dbaschool@sswug.org if you’d like to be on the short list of early notification for the class registration.
