Creating sites of custom templates with SharePoint Designer workflow
Here is the scenario: You need to create a sub-site based on user filling out a SharePoint out of the box list form that will define the sub-site. In my recent scenario I had a list where user created item defining a “client”. For each of those clients I needed to create a sub-site that obviously inherited certain template that I defined by saving my site as a template.

Mark writes: "SQL Server was a key component of my recent SharePoint installation and deployment. Not only were named instances used to separate the
Staging- and Production-Environments, but Microsoft recommends regular (sometimes daily) SQL Server level maintenance like verifying database integrity, rebuilding indexes, updating statistics, and trimming the Transaction Log.

I accomplished these tasks with several Maintenance Plans that ran daily (included full backup), every four hours (added differential backup), and Transaction Log backups every 15 minutes (only required 8 seconds). (Hey! If you do TL backups every 15 minutes, you ought to perform several differentials per day, so you do not need to restore 96 TL backups in the DRP!)"

…and Nate wrote "I am c.) coming to SQL Server from the SharePoint world. I’m also really interested in being a good DBA, and your site and vConferences help a great deal. My current position is structured to integrate my SharePoint Admin/Dev skills and my IT “generalist” experience (Windows Server, AD, SQL Server, web development, scripting…etc.).

This was not always the case and made for some challenging conversations with the business and my IT peers… One book that I really like and recommend for IT staff involved in SharePoint strategy/implementation is “Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Best Practices” published by Microsoft Press. Great coverage on governance and architecture and *very* nice to be able to show business and IT management. It can help drive “strategic” conversations about your company’s content/records management.
It’s the “tactical” solutions, the departmental systems like Access that don’t include IT in planning and management, that are the real performance and perception killers for SharePoint in the long run.

It takes a lot of effort for the business (and IT) to "unlearn" a process/solution and implement a better one. Best to get it as right as possible from the start and iterate from there."
