SQL Server Notification Services Moves to CEP
I don’t know if you’d heard, but for a while now Microsoft has talked about Notification Services going away. It’s officially happened and been replaced with CEP – Complex Event Processing.

CEP is a built around some of the newer data stream processing features of SQL Server 2008 R2. R2 is all about better processing of information from a decision-making standpoint – being able to make your way around data, see what’s happening, make decisions more in real-time and less on snapshot time. While I have to admit to still wrapping my head around this, there are clear directions for processing and working with data that will add new dimensions to how we use and apply data streams to decision processes.

I think the combination of snapshot data and ongoing real-time analysis is the definition of business intelligence going forward. These are not necessarily trivial to implement (there are new dashboards to be built and dreamed up, new ways of presenting data) but that’s *not* a reason to not seriously work with with these new approaches.
