Specialization with SQL Server Expertise
I am receiving more and more requests for information and opinion (always a dangerous thing) on how people can best go about focusing talents and skill sets on SQL Server for application either as a consultant or an to provide additional leverage internal to their company. In essence, "I clearly can’t know all of it, so are there areas of SQL Server I should focus on for best pay-off for both my clients and me?"

So, I thought I’d toss this out to the group and see what you think. Specifically, if you were talking with someone looking to do specific, narrow-focus consulting, what would you recommend get they really good at doing with SQL Server? Here are the email suggestions for topics that I’ve received, just in the last few weeks:

– Replication specialization
– SSIS – packages, upgrades, creation and modification
– Disaster recovery
– SSAS

Are these interesting or applicable do you think? If not, are there other concise areas that you think either are, or will be, in demand? I think there is certainly demand in each of these areas, and I think the SSIS and DR areas are important and something we do see people asking about (looking for consultants) for their solutions. Do you think specialization helps or hurts a consulting business? You can be too specialized, clearly. If all you know how to do is set up catalogs for replication, but don’t know the rest, I’d say you’re probably in trouble.

Send me a quick note here, let me know what you think.

The final segment of the three-part show – There are some great scripts out there that will bring you all sorts of information about what’s happening with your SQL Servers, debugging, performance management, indexing and a whole lot more. Chris and I set out to find the best of the best scripts and put together a several part show so you could see just a bit of what’s available. Kudos to the script-builders out there – great work!

Part 3: Chris Shaw, Stephen Wynkoop explore the top 10 SQL Server scripts that you simply must know about. Learn about scripts, why these particular scripts are great and where they are found.
