Performance Monitoring – How Are You Doing It?

Automatic content provisioning to your existing SharePoint lists and libraries
In my previous article on automated content provisioning we`ve seen how you can provision content to document libraries and lists at the time of those document libraries being created as a part of your deployment. This technique is quite common when you deploy your solutions to QA environment and need to provision initial files and list items that will be part of your solution (site images, list entries etc). But what about lists that have been already create by SharePoint as a part of the template that you have no control over?

Performance Monitoring – How Are You Doing It?
We’ve been teaching the DBASchool class this week and enjoying talking with everyone about what they’re doing, what they see and then going through best practices and how to squeeze even a bit more out of our systems.

The one thing that’s clear is that everyone seems to approach performance from a different standpoint. It’s crazy how many ways you can dig into performance issues. Between things we’ve talked about and things I’ve been talking with people on Facebook and such about, the tools range from Performance Monitor to 3rd Party Tools to custom-built tools. It’s also pretty clear that automating monitoring and comparison against baselines and historical performance, along with forecasting, is something that really could use some attention. Why is it so hard?! Why is it so manual?! It’s an odd process of pulling different bits of information from different areas and then trying to net it out to find out what’s really happening on your system. Yuck.

Things are getting better, but still…

I have a question – what is your approach? What tools do you use? How do investigate a performance issue, and how do you manage performance over the longer-term? It’s one thing to chase after a specific issue, but you do need to do ongoing monitoring and such. What’s your approach?

Drop me a note here, let me know how you keep track of what’s happening. Even if you’re using third-party tools (or a combination of tools), I’d love to hear how you are addressing it.
