Big News of the Day: Visual Studio 2010 Released
In Vegas at the launch event, Microsoft has released the next version of Visual Studio, with native support for .NET 3.5, 4, the ribbon interface and a lot more. For a while now Microsoft has been talking about making the ribbon interface more readily usable for developers. Including it in this release with the tools necessary to integrate it is a big step forward to making it more broadly implemented. I have to say, and I may get disagreements, I like the ribbon interface. I think it does good things, when done well, for productivity in applications. I look forward to seeing the toolsets and the application updates it leads to.

If you’re interested in learning more about the release, check out the on-demand sessions here from Channel 9 – from the Vegas event.

Stored procedure? Drop me a note, let me know – we’ll see how many we can get shared out to everyone.

Webcast: Basics of Administering Databases for The Layman – Part 3
Okay, so you’ve gotten your data into your database. Did you do it right? Do you have too much data? Do you have the right data? Can you actually get the data out that you want? Now how do you get it out? This session will take you through some examples of why you want to have less data in a database to be more accurate (normalization), how that’s done, and how it makes the data in your database more accurate. It also explains why, in certain circumstances, it could be beneficial not to do that. Topics included will be indexes: what, why, and how to use them, what the benefits are, what the tradeoffs are. Also, different ways to maintain them and why you want to do that, and why some of Microsoft’s canned maintenance plans can be a problem and where to look for solutions to those problems.
