PowerShell, BI, Data and Information
I saw a mention of a poster that outlines the use and interaction of and between PowerPivot and your systems in SharePoint, SQL Server, etc. It’s a great poster, just slightly complete. You can check it out here.

If this poster doesn’t give you pause, I’m not sure what will. With all due respect (and there is a LOT of respect from me for PowerPivot and it’s use) to Microsoft’s teams, HOLY COW! Geez – seriously? I mean this is a tool that is being provided for end-users and those that are supposed to be partaking of SQL Server’s Self-Service Business Intelligence. Would you like to give this poster to your users? Would you like to explain it?

PowerPivot is incredible, there’s not doubt. But the usability is frankly kicking my butt. Perhaps I’m making it more difficult than it needs to be, I’m sure that’s the case. I’ve had some early successes too in building some interesting reporting and tools for accessing information. It’s all good so far. The issue comes in when I want to build more of a reporting application, using PowerPivot as the middle layer for data summarization, etc. I’m still looking to master that one, I’m afraid.

I was just really surprised by the poster – kudos for being complete, but it also gives me pause about how complicated our end-user environments are, from a development/support standpoint and from an end-user standpoint.

Yes, I get it – you probably wouldn’t give this poster to the end-user community, but the complexity surprised me as presented.
