Do You Actively Work to Limit Database Platforms In Use?
There is much talk about different platforms, different approaches to databases and how we build applications to store and manage data. This goes well beyond the SQL Server/Oracle/etc. debate and includes things like "document" databases, "columnar" databases, NoSQL and so-on.

Do you look for new platforms to deploy to address specific requirements? I was reading a series of different blog posts and articles and while they may have had an ulterior motive (I couldn’t tell for sure), they were suggesting that you review each PART of an application and figure out what platform is best suited for that portion of the application. It helps you optimize things, they say.

I say, "just kill me now." Seriously – can you imaging troubleshooting/supporting/recovering/etc. an application that actually relied on multiple database engines by process? Good grief. In my opinion. you’d go nuts. Pick a platform and go with it. There are significant choice points to some of these databases. If all of your application won’t fit, just say no. Use the right platform for the whole of the application.

How do you approach this? Are you being asked to split up the database support within an application? Am I crazy here?

What do you think?
