More Experiences on What Works for Learning Tech
Cornel
wrote in to say "I’ve been around for some 30 years in the industry. In the early years about half my training needs were met through courses and half through trial and error and talking to more senior guys when stuck. No mentor as such. More recently almost all my learning is self taught.

I have however successfully used the coach/mentor approach on at least 3 colleagues over the years and can definitely vouch to its effectiveness. They were all complete IT novices and all made it in IT. My tutoring was on a one to one basis, and spanned periods of between three and twelve months, usually interspersed my day job responsibilities. And during this time, the individuals were productive and not simply a drain to the company."

and Muhammad wrote "Seniors are always handy when we are going through learning process and even after that. But one thing i would like to add, we do need resources in the company to implement the things. We do need regular trainings with [new] technologies.

If you want to build a cluster and you are in a company that can’t afford or implement them, then you can never do this.

If you want to partition a large database and you do have standard edition of database then you can never create the partition on live system. So, yes, resources and a free hand are also required to learn the SQL/Database."

Get Your Implementation Organized

Service Accounts * Web Applications * Application Pools * File Locations * Database Names – when it comes to SharePoint environments, if you don’t plan ahead, your environment can quickly become a disorganized mess of IIS, SQL & SharePoint components. Suddenly you don’t know what web application maps to what application pool in IIS, or even worse, you don’t know what service accounts perform what functions! This session will cover strategies and provide recommendations on ways that SharePoint administrators can reign in their farm — and make sure that no matter who is managing it, everyone is on the same page. Organization is key — and this session will help get you one step closer to organization nirvana.
