Does the Cloud Change Database Administration?
I was talking with a friend today about database tuning and we got into a surprising conversation about tweaking and tuning SQL Server. The reason it turned surprising is because we were talking a great deal about the cloud and how it could change things.
His thoughts centered around having so much processing power behind SQL Server that tuning and tweaking becomes a far less important task. With so much power in the cloud, it will make up for performance issues we may have in our designs and make those designs more forgiving.
My argument was that we’d still need to be tweaking and tuning because this is sort of where we were pre-recession – "just throw hardware at it" – but it only goes so far. First, if you have a highly inefficient application design, you’ll be beating up the SQL Server processes unnecessarily. This means real money, since many (most/all) of the cloud-based services are usage-based in terms of charging for the service. So, if your app is wasting processing, now you’ll be charged for it.
Second, straight up performance and responsiveness-wise, I just don’t see the need going away for making things snappy. This, plus the fact that more and more data is stored and more and more BI-type systems are entering the fold means tuning is going to be key. If you’re pulling a long-running query for that BI system against a poorly designed database, you’re going to see it, or certainly your users will.
So, my question is – is the cloud really the ultimate "just throw hardware at it" or do you think it’ll still require heavy duty tuning?

Get Your Implementation Organized
When it comes to SharePoint environments, if you don’t plan ahead, your environment can quickly become a disorganized mess of IIS, SQL & SharePoint components. Suddenly you don’t know what web application maps to what application pool in IIS, or even worse, you don’t know what service accounts perform what functions! This session will cover strategies and provide recommendations on ways that SharePoint administrators can reign in their farm and make sure that no matter who is managing it, everyone is on the same page. Organization is key and this session will help get you one step closer to organization nirvana.
