How to Grow a DBA
As I was reading through a number of UserGroups in which I participate I came accross an individual asking if a person who was a Business Analyst could become a DBA.

My mind immediatly went back to a mechanical engineer who worked with my father. I was amazed to learn that this person had a degree in music, and learned engineering on the job.

Steve has mentioned the accidental DBA a number of times. Many of you found yourself learning database techniques by being the only one who could figure things out.

How about some of the rest of you? How did you become a DBA? Was there a strategy you followed or things you did to prepare for your role? Did you do some form of intern as a DBA assistant? Did you transfer from some other development role?

Share your insights for those who may not be a DBA today, but may aspire to the job. Send your comments to btaylor@sswug.org.

Cheers,

Ben
